Good News Chapel Twists The Story Of The Widow

In the above video, a Good News Chapel Montreal pastor can be heard twisting Scripture to demand sacrificial giving.

Good News Chapel does not understand the simple Bible passage about the widow who gave all she had. How then can they be in a position to teach others?

The story about the widow who gave all she had (Luke 21:1-4) is Jesus' critique of the corrupt religious system.

This corrupt system manipulated the widow to give away everything, down to her last penny, to religious leaders with the false hope of buying herself a blessing.

This sounds a lot like what Good News Chapel is encouraging when they demand people to give sacrificially, that is, beyond their means.

This church criticizes people who only “give the Lord a tip” and says that their heart is not in it. This is because the church leaders are greedy for more money!

Jesus only observed what the widow did. Jesus never actually commanded his disciples to give like the widow in this passage. Jesus does not want or encourage this type of giving!

Just verses before the widow is mentioned in Luke 21, Luke 20:45-47 gives us the context of the widow's story.

While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples, "Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets. They devour widows' houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely."
Luke 20:45-47

Notice what Jesus says about the religious leaders in verse 47. Jesus says, "Beware of the scribes" because they "devour widows' houses". Jesus then proceeds to say that these religious leaders "will be punished most severely" for financially abusing widows.

When we read the story of the widow in context, we see that Jesus views the widow as a victim of a corrupt religious system that pressures the poor to give beyond their means.

Right after the widow is mentioned, in Luke 21:6, Jesus says that this greedy religious system will be judged as he foretells the destruction of the temple.

"As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down."
Luke 21:6

Of all the things that could have triggered Jesus to speak of the destruction of the temple, it was seeing the poor widow being financially abused. This shows how much Jesus cares about those who are abused by corrupt religious leaders.

Good News Chapel, the time of your judgement is coming too. Repent of your greed for more and more donation money. Repent of twisting Scripture for your selfish benefit. Preach the Bible in context and stop manipulating Bible passages.
